New Leader Boot Camp

The first program of its kind in the nation, the New Leader Boot Camp© (NLBC) is a six-month training program designed to give first time elected officials the tools and resources they need to hit the ground running as a legislator.

Started in 2014, NLBC has grown tremendously over the past decade, preparing over sixty freshman legislators to be effective advocates for their communities.

Developed by nationally respected leaders and veteran local advocates, the groundbreaking NLBC curriculum provides freshmen legislators with the tools and tactics to increase leverage, navigate institutional power, and build a radical culture of collaboration.

What to Expect

  • Meet for two full days, one weekend per month, plus one evening session for six months
  • Engage in reading, discussion, and exercises necessary for understanding both the theory and practice of great leadership, and build problem-solving skills through case studies and projects.
  • Cover subjects including:
    • Demystifying inner workings of legislative bodies at the local and state level.
    • Pitfalls and opportunities of the budgeting process.
    • Setting up an effective office and constituent services operation, with emphasis on the process and benefits of incorporating community engagement into the legislative process.
    • Refining their racial equity lens and practice applying it to the consideration of policy proposals, given its impact on past, present, and future policy.
  • Build strong relationships that continue long beyond the training program, transforming into a base of support after leaders take office.

Who Should Apply

  • Progressive leaders on the ballot for the November general election.

You'll come away ahead of the game, and equipped to be a part of a movement. You will be better equipped to succeed in both the short and long term.

New Leaders Boot Camp set the stage for collective action, and prepared me and my colleagues with enough insight and relationship building opportunity to make it possible.
